In general G&L bass guitars are very articulate, with nice note definition. The addition of the quarter-sawn neck further enhances the natural resonance and response of this guitar. The quarter-sawn neck means that the grain of the wood is perpendicular to the fingerboard. This adds additional stiffness and stability, and also changes how the guitar responds. Faster attack, tighter low end and an overall sense of liveliness are typical attributes of this type of neck. It's a great option, and well worth the slight additional expense.

With the single MFD pickup biased towards the bridge end of things and the EQ controls wide open, the sound is naturally crisp. In the active mode, the L1505 is very snappy with a clean high end and what could best be described as a modern "active" bass sound: Tight, clean, with a nice bounce to the notes, and clear piano-like lows. If you like to play slap bass, it's wonderfully responsive and the notes really jump. Rolling off the treble control warms up the top end and creates a rounder overall sound good for players who like a more mellow style, or just don't want to pop out of the mix too much. There is plenty of range in both EQ controls and "just" one pickup seems to be more than enough for any mood.

The series/parallel switch does pretty much what you'd expect: The parallel mode is a little leaner and more JB-like in sound, while the series mode bumps up both the output and low end response. While the series mode would generally seem like the way to go, those who like to play slap might find the parallel mode a little tighter and more controlled, while series setting will appeal to those who like their low notes served up big and beefy.Switching the L1505 to passive mode does change the character of the guitar. Most noticeable is that the highs are rounder, warmer -- and you guessed it -- very much like a passive bass guitar! It's a more traditional vibe, more old school, and very similar to the traditional classic Leo Fender designs.

5-string necks can often feel like quite a handful, but the 1-3/4" nut width of the G&L #10 neck is no wider than many standard bass guitars. The neck thickness is also the same as their 4-string necks, and the flattened-C profile provides good reach and comfort. If you are diehard four string player, there is still that pesky low B to get used to, but otherwise the feel is very familiar and comfortable.

The L1505 is also an excellent studio instrument; with 5-string versatility, powerful active controls, and quiet hum-free operation. With all these benefits and really no downsides, the G&L L1505 is a must for for both studio and stage.
