Japanese rarity from the early 2000s – Greco TV-800SE in Brown Burst finish. Year 2002, manufactured in March (serial number C021503). Visually it looks great, and the wood stripes show through the finish beautifully and clearly.
The TV series from Greco consists of instruments with a serious rock pedigree. This particular model is the signature of Seiichi Iida – bassist of the bands CRAZE and ZI:KILL, which were highly popular in Japan back then. Visually, it's a successful nod to double-cut designs in the style of the TV Bass. However, it's not a classic, blind copy – the Japanese modified this design for modern, heavier playing.
The body is made entirely of solid maple, and the neck is maple and bolt-on. The rosewood fretboard with 22 frets features the distinctive TV-SE inlay. The biggest manual asset of this bass is its scale – it's a medium scale (32 inches). Thanks to the shorter neck, the distance between frets is smaller, making the bass exceptionally handy and agile. The nut width is a comfortable 40 mm.
Two Greco Power Storm humbuckers and active electronics with a 2-band EQ are responsible for the tone. The control layout consists of Master Volume, Pickup Balancer, Bass, and Treble. The maple body combined with these electronics delivers a bright, articulate sound with a fast attack. When played with a pick, the bass generates a powerful, growling midrange that easily cuts through the mix. Tuning stability is ensured by reliable Gotoh hardware and a massive bridge.
I rate the visual condition as a solid 8/10. The instrument has some years on it and shows normal signs of use in the form of shallow scratches or minor dings visible under the light, but there are no paint chips or wood damage. The whole thing still looks fresh.
Technically, the bass is fully ready to play. The truss rod is functional, works smoothly, and allows for precise relief adjustment. The original frets show light signs of wear but are tall, even, and require no luthier intervention. The string action is currently set comfortably at 1.8-2 mm over the 12th fret – it plays softly and without any dead notes. The weight is 4.4 kg, and the solid mass translates into a long, stable sustain.

Die TV-Serie von Greco sind Instrumente mit echter Rock-Tradition. Dieses spezielle Modell ist das Signature-Modell von Seiichi Iida – dem Bassisten der damals in Japan sehr populären Formationen CRAZE und ZI:KILL. Optisch ist es eine gelungene Verbeugung vor Double-Cut-Konstruktionen im TV-Bass-Stil. Es ist jedoch keine klassische, blinde Kopie – die Japaner haben dieses Design für modernes, härteres Spiel modifiziert.
Der Korpus besteht komplett aus massivem Ahorn, der Hals ist ebenfalls aus Ahorn und geschraubt (Bolt-on). Auf dem Palisander-Griffbrett mit 22 Bünden befindet sich die charakteristische Kennzeichnung TV-SE. Der größte spielerische Vorteil dieses Basses ist seine Mensur – es ist eine Medium Scale (32 Zoll). Für den Sound sorgen zwei Greco Power Storm Humbucker sowie eine aktive Elektronik mit 2-Band-Equalizer. Die Potis sind aufgeteilt in Master Volume, Pickup Balancer, Bass und Treble. Der Ahornkorpus liefert in Kombination mit dieser Elektronik einen klaren, selektiven Sound mit schnellem Attack. Mit dem Plektrum gespielt erzeugt der Bass ein kräftiges, knurrendes Mittenband, das sich im Mix problemlos durchsetzt.
