For sale is an icon of the early 1980s bass – a 1982 Japanese Aria Pro II SB-1000 in a classic Oak Gloss finish. Beautiful, isn't it?
If the SB series is the flagship of the now-legendary Matsumoku factory, then the 1000 is its crown jewel.
The goal of this bass was clear – it was to promote Japanese guitar making worldwide. No compromises, no savings. The accountants were asked not to even look at it.
Canadian ash body, neck-thru-body construction with a seven-piece maple and walnut neck, and a dense rosewood fretboard. Add over half a kilo of brass: a heavy bridge, nut, pickup plate, and even a large electronics cover. Everything is richly detailed and impeccably finished.
The electronics themselves are a separate story – we have an 18V-powered preamp that allows you to switch between six different presets and has an independent noise filter. The bass also has a passive mode, which is just as loud as the active one.
When it comes to handling, the SB-1000 is a beast of a beast. It's 42mm at the nut, with a rather beefy neck (thicker than the Fender Jazz Bass and slimmer than the Precision), but with 18mm string spacing. As a result, the neck is very similar in width throughout, which – after a while – becomes very comfortable. With an action of 1.5mm above the 12th fret, the guitar is perfect for fast playing; your fingers literally float along the fretboard.
It's no coincidence that Cliff Burton of Metallica, John Taylor of Duran Duran, and Jack Bruce all played the SB-1000 – it's an axe made for metal and various prog rock styles.
Although it's quite heavy (4.8 kg), it has excellent balance and doesn't neck dive.
Sound-wise, this is a bass that definitely performs better with other instruments than soloed – although each of the six presets has a unique tone, they're all quite old-school. However, it performs brilliantly in a mix – it cuts through beautifully and responds vividly to articulation.
The bass is in excellent, practically unheard-of condition. There are literally three tiny dents, two scratches, a bit of patina… and nothing more. The frets have plenty of life left in them, the hardware and electronics are in perfect working order, and the truss rod is fully functional. The bass is incredibly eye-pleasing, both for its condition (over 40 years old!) and its beautiful grain – I've personally never seen a nicer SB-1000.
The guitar is available for play in Poznań (Poland - sorry, not possible to add a Polish postcode here). Safe shipping is possible. Comes with a dedicated hardcase.
Private sale so no warranty, return etc. I'm trying to reduce my collection so trades are very unlikely.
