For sale is a rare, active Fernandes FRB-90 bass guitar from the early 1990s. This high-end model, made in Japan, dates back to the heyday of this renowned brand. It has a 34-inch scale and a beautiful translucent purple finish.
The bass reflects contemporary trends: the PJ configuration (very "hot" FGI Technology pickups), the distinctive grain of the ash body, and a slim, satin-finished neck. The neck is slightly wider than that of the Jazz Bass (40 mm on an adjustable brass saddle - qa great feature known from Warwicks) and is very comfortable.
The FRB is perfect for extreme slapping or fast, technical playing. The bass's sound seems designed for heavier riffs, too - it has plenty of natural growl and a sharp high end. The FGI pickups are well-balanced; the guitar resonates strongly even with the bridge pickup soloed. The Precision pickup has a slightly PB feel, but its active character is evident. The obvious advantage is the 24 frets.
For its approximately 35-year-old age, the guitar is in good condition. There are three minor chips and a few scratches on the body, but the paintwork still looks good. It's worth noting, however, that the high-gloss finish attracts fingerprints and any scuffs, as seen in the photos, but I wanted brutally honest lighting.
The neck is straight, and the truss rod works well, turning - though with some resistance - in both directions. The bridge has more wear and tear: the E-string nut has lost some of its gold finish, and the thread on one of the adjustment screws has worn out, making it more difficult to adjust. However, the action is very comfortable, 1.8-2.0mm at the 12th fret. No problems with the electronics or the Gotoh tuners. The bass weighs 4.1kg and is perfectly balanced.
