I'm selling a practically unused Fender Jazz Bass-style History HJB-Performance guitar.
History is a Japanese brand that produces mid- to high-end basses for the local market. The Performance Series is their Made in China line, though with quality control in Japan. I imported it from Nippon a while ago because I was curious how the basses of this quality, which are currently unavailable in Europe, fare.
Although the HJB is an entry-level model, it's not cheap – new ones sell for over 100,000 yen. This one is from 2022.
The bass certainly doesn't look low-budget – the wood (alder body, pao ferro fretboard), the hardware (thicker steel bridge, decent tuners), and details like the bone nut and three-ply pickguard are all well-received. The finish is also beyond reproach: the rounded frets, neck pocket and pickup holes are perfectly cut, and the paint job is flawless. Truly solid workmanship.
The ergonomics were also well-thought-out – History designed an aesthetically pleasing and comfortable neck-to-body joint, and the thin, satin-finish neck is very pleasant to the touch. The string action is now 1.7mm at the 12th fret. The guitar weighs approximately 4.2 kg.
The HJB offers a wide range of tonal possibilities: it's active (2-band), and by pulling the second knob, you connect both single-coils in series, transforming them into… a humbucker. This provides a significant punch. The first knob has a push/pull switch for switching between active and passive modes. Unfortunately, the latter lacks a tone control.
I'd consider the pickups to be the guitar's weakest point – they have a strong signal, even in the passive mode, but compared to more expensive basses, they lack refinement, especially in the midrange. However, they cut through other instruments very well.
The condition is practically perfect. The only blemish is a small scratch near the bridge. I have a lot of much more expensive basses, so I haven't played this one much – which is why I'm selling. Nevertheless, I consider the History a good, classic-looking alternative to, say, the Sire V7 or Fender Player.
It comes with a thin gig bag.
Can be played in Poznań (Poland) or shipped safely within the whole EU.
