You don't see something like this very often – a Japanese short-scale bass (30") in the JJ configuration from the famous Fujigen.

First, a little… ahem, history. In the mid-1990s, Shimamura – already in existence for three decades, Japan's largest chain of music stores and schools – decided to create its own brand of guitars. However, these weren't to be Chinese-made, but rather robust, locally built mid- to high-end instruments. Production was entrusted to the renowned Fujigen factory – the same one that worked on the Fender MiJ and Ibanez Prestige. The necks of the most expensive models were hand-carved by luthiers from Sugi. To this day, prices in the History guitar and bass catalog, as the new brand was called, range from 90,000 to 400,000 yen.

Getting back to the bass – it's the History MBJ-1. At first glance, it looks like a mini Fender Boxer… and that's basically what it sounds like, too. Slightly skewed single coils with large magnets deliver a very powerful signal, while the mahogany body and rosewood on a maple neck deliver a rather dark sound with a pronounced high end when played with force. Although the guitar weighs less than 3 kg, the body resonates like crazy – the photos show that the precision of the fit is superior. The Gotoh hardware certainly plays a role. Although the MBJ-1 is over 10 centimeters shorter than standard basses, you don't experience the string-slack feeling associated with cheaper short-scale basses. The History sounds and performs like a full-size bass. One photo shows a comparison with a traditional Jazz Bass.

The guitar was built in 2002. For almost a quarter of a century, it's in very good condition – there are a few small chips on the body, one dent, and a scuff on the lower edge, but that's about it. The original protective film is still on the back cover. The neck, frets, and tuners are all in excellent condition. The action is very low, 1.3-1.5mm above the 12th fret. The bass has a beautiful Candy Red lacquer finish with the same headstock. The satin finish on the neck is very nice, reminding me of the Fender Jazz Bass Standard USA.

Fun fact: at the same time, History also offered the MMBJ model, which was 24 inches long and marketed as a "kids' bass." It looked almost identical, so you can sometimes find the MBJ-1 incorrectly described online as a "kids' bass." However, it's a completely different series and size.

The string spacing is 19mm, and the nut width is 37mm. With the standard 20 frets, it's a great choice for those with small hands or those looking for a small but professional-looking stage bass.

The bass can be played in Poznań (Poland!), and secure shipping won't be a problem.
