I am selling a beautiful Japanese Tokai VSB-80 bass. It was the highest and limited series of the famous Hard Punchers, produced at the very beginning of the 80s, still in the pre-lawsuit era (hence the headstock shape and the Fender-style logo - although the body, as you can see, is very original). It’s a very rare guitar.
What do we have here? All the sweet things - a heavy brass bridge, powerful tuners (they are really solid!), spectacular binding around a beautiful figured maple top. In addition, an ash body, a one-piece maple neck and two Tokai pickups in the PJ configuration.
The axe is almost 45 years old and has quite a bit of mojo - it has been played. There are scratches, abrasions, dings&dongs and one larger chip on the back. At the same time, the bass does not give the impression of being tired, it still looks good, and the top and binding have been preserved in excellent condition. Tokais had always been perfectly finished, and here you can also see this one was of a top price range.
Technically everything works - both the truss rod and the electronics (vol/tone/switch). The frets show some signs of wear, but they are high; the action is currently set to a very comfortable 1.6mm-1.8mm (G to E).
As for the sound, it is a strong vintage Precision bass with a dynamic, nasal top from the bridge pickup. It sounds great with a pipck, a bit like Gibson Thunderbird.
The bass is very comfortable - if you like PB and don’t mind the angular shape of the body with binding. The neck is 42mm at the nut and has a meaty profile, although it is not a baseball bat; it fits well in the hand, and access to the highest positions is not a problem. The pros also include a small weight for this size and hardware, 4.2kg.
Possibility of playing in Poznań (Poland) or safe international shipping, with a simple gigbag included.
Private sell, so no warranty, return etc.
