For sale is a very rare Yamaha bass guitar – a BB VIII model with two Precision pickups. Made in Japan, vintage 1985.
At first glance, you can tell what to expect from this bass – yes, there's plenty of meat.
The front pickup sounds like a typical, good PB.
The rear pickup comes a bit closer to Joe Dart and his passive Music Man: a nasal, punchy sound, but still with plenty of bottom end. A surprisingly useful setup.
On both pickups, the Yamaha takes on a more modern character with boosted highs and lows. In every position, it's very dynamic; the pickups are "hot" and respond lively to articulation. EQ is very simple – vol/tone/switch.
Manually, it's a typical Yamaha BB - for Broad Bass. Good ergonomics and access to high frets, a relatively thin but wide neck (43mm at the nut), and a decent weight of just over 4 kg. The alder body reveals pleasant grain through the translucent lacquer. The Japanese finish is of excellent quality, with excellent frets, holes, and fit. Full scale, 34 inches.
The guitar is 40 years old and has some scratches, hardware marks, and dings, though none are major. Technically, it's in excellent condition: the truss rod works smoothly, the tuners stay in tune, intonation is great. The guitar has just had its frets polished and the electronics serviced by a luthier. The action is 1.5-1.7mm above the 12th fret, very low.
I'm selling it with a thick, elegant gig bag.
The bass can be played in Poznań (Poznan), and safe shipping within the EU won't be a problem.
It's a private sale so no warranty, return etc. can be offered.
