32"-Mensur, 38-mm-Sattel, sehr schlanker Hals, 4,0 kg. Top-Verarbeitung: hervorragend abgerichtete Bünde, passgenaue Halstasche, makellose Lackierung.
Japanese medium-scale LP bass – Greco "EGB-TA", February 2000, flame-top sunburst with gold hardware
Flamed top under a sunburst, gold hardware and two open humbuckers – a classic LP bass at first glance, but this Greco has a few surprises.
Greco is Kanda Shokai's brand, building instruments for the Japanese domestic market since 1960. Its Les Paul-style basses carried the EGB designation – best known are the short-scale, set-neck EGB-850 and EGB-100 of the early '90s. This one is different: the neck heel carries a factory "EGB-TA" stamp on the bare wood, under the lacquer, but it's a bolt-on with a flat, unbound top and a 32" medium scale. I couldn't find this version in any available Greco catalogue from the '90s or 2003, so it's most likely a short run from the turn of the century; the serial dates it to February 2000. Matching red "L" marks on the neck heel and in the neck pocket indicate the neck and body were paired at the factory (see photos).
Two passive humbuckers with a very hot output, lots of lows and thick mids, little top end – there's no tone knob at all, just volume and balance. Sound-wise it's definitely closer to a Rickenbacker than a Jazz Bass: great for stoner, dirty rock or metal, especially with a pick and some drive. Long, even sustain.
32" scale, 38 mm nut, very slim neck, 4.0 kg. Superb build: excellent fretwork, tight neck pocket, flawless lacquer. Greco-branded gold bridge, Japanese tuners.
Very good minus condition: a few finish chips on the body edges (incl. near the lower strap button), a scratched control cavity cover and a few light marks on the black back. Truss rod works perfectly, frets show only light playing wear, action 1.9–2.1 mm at the 12th fret.
Private sale. Can be tried out in Poznań, Poland; safe shipping from Poland is no problem.
