For sale is a Lakland Skyline Japan Series SK4-CL in a Gold/Rose finish, a rare bird in this part of the world. Year 2014, near-mint condition.
Manufactured by ESP Japan, the SK4s are flawlessly finished and feature branded hardware (Hipshot Light tuners), but they received more budget-friendly electronics than the Indonesian 4402 models.
How does this translate to sound? The SK4-CL definitely doesn't have as hot a signal as its more popular cousin and doesn't push the speakers quite as hard in the low end. However, we don't get that terrible volume drop when switching off the EQ here – unlike the 44s, the CL is a perfectly usable passive bass. In my opinion, the Duncan Designed pickups, made in Korea to Seymour's specs, "fake" the Stingray sound much better than the Lakland USA electronics. Duncans have always simply been closer to the classic Music Man vibe.
The Japan Series also differs in tonewoods: we have an alder body here and a dark, striking rosewood fretboard.
Nuances aside, it's first and foremost a Lakland, meaning an insanely versatile axe for playing literally anything. The possibilities are endless: 3-band EQ, pickup blend, active/passive toggle, and humbucker coil tapping (60s, 70s, and MM modes).
Ergonomics are also top-notch. 34" scale, a satin, thin neck (38mm at the nut!), weight around 4.2 kg, easy access to all 22 frets, and comfortable truss rod adjustment – the designers thought of every detail.
The bass is practically in showroom condition. Apart from a millimeter-sized "spiderweb" finish check at the bottom of the body and a tiny mark on the headstock, the instrument looks brand new. The frets are perfect, action set comfortably at 1.7-1.8mm over the 12th fret.
Selling with the original documentation and a Lakland gigbag.
You can test drive it in Poznań, Poland. Safe shipping is not a problem.
Please note: As this is a private sale, the instrument is sold "as-is". I exclude any warranty, guarantee, or the right of return.
